Getting Started with Subscription Tracking

A practical guide to taking control of your recurring expenses — from finding hidden subscriptions to setting up renewal alerts.

SubHome Team

Most households spend over €300 per month on subscriptions without realising it. Streaming services, cloud storage, fitness apps, news sites — they add up quietly. This guide shows you how to get full visibility and control in under 15 minutes.

Step 1 — Find Every Subscription You Have

Before you can manage subscriptions, you need to know what you're paying for. The fastest way:

  1. Check your bank statements — search for recurring charges from the last 3 months
  2. Check your email for receipts with words like "receipt", "invoice", or "subscription"
  3. Check your app stores — both the App Store and Google Play have a "Subscriptions" section under your account

Common subscriptions people forget: Adobe Creative Cloud, LinkedIn Premium, domain registrations, antivirus software, and cloud backup services.

Step 2 — Add Them to SubHome

Once you have your list, add each subscription to SubHome with:

  • Service name and the cost you actually pay (not the listed price — include any discounts)
  • Billing period — monthly or annual (annual subscriptions are often 30–40% cheaper)
  • Renewal date — this is the most important field for avoiding surprise charges
  • Notice period — how many days before renewal you need to cancel to avoid being charged

SubHome will automatically calculate your monthly equivalent cost for annual plans, so you can compare fairly.

Step 3 — Set Up Renewal Alerts

The biggest source of wasted money is forgetting to cancel something before it renews. SubHome sends you alerts based on the notice period you set:

  • Set a 7-day alert for most services (plenty of time to decide)
  • Set a 30-day alert for annual subscriptions (gives you time to find alternatives)
  • Set a 14-day alert for services with a long cancellation process (looking at you, gym memberships)

Step 4 — Categorise and Analyse

Use SubHome's categories to understand where your money goes:

CategoryCommon culprits
EntertainmentNetflix, Spotify, Disney+, Apple TV+
ProductivityMicrosoft 365, Adobe, Notion, 1Password
Health & FitnessApple Fitness+, Headspace, MyFitnessPal
News & ReadingNewspaper sites, Substack, Audible
Cloud & TechiCloud, Google One, Dropbox, LastPass

Most people are shocked to discover they're paying for 2–3 services in the same category.

Step 5 — Make a Keep / Pause / Cancel Decision

For each subscription, ask yourself: have I used this in the last 30 days?

  • Yes, regularly → Keep it
  • Yes, but rarely → Look for a cheaper tier or annual plan
  • No → Cancel or pause it

If you can't remember whether you've used something, that's your answer.

What's Next

Once you've got the basics in place, explore SubHome's Analytics view to see your total monthly spend, biggest categories, and upcoming renewals. The Family feature lets you share visibility with up to 4 family members — so everyone can see what's being paid for from the shared account.

Subscription tracking isn't a one-time task. Set a reminder to review your subscriptions every quarter — services raise prices, needs change, and free trials turn into paid plans.
